DLTM and NURC together for Supercomputing Technology
The Ligurian District of Marine Technology was created to make the system relevant skills and infrastructure in the territory break such as the Navy, the GI and SMEs, Universities (Genoa, Pisa and the University Centre) and research organizations in the area (CNR, ENEA, INGV and NURC). Specifically the creation of the district technology allows it to operate successfully in research and development of new marine and naval systems, underwater and surface, allowing for innovative technological implications in the military and civil shipbuilding in recreational boating, safety systems, logistics and monitoring and rehabilitation of the marine environment.
part of the development of innovative technologies in key areas of the district is essential to the use of systems modeling and numerical simulation, using high-performance computing architectures, enabling you to draw, design and optimization, marine structures and / or simulation and analyze complex physical phenomena. For these reasons it was acquired and is already operating a center for high performance computing (HPC). The technical details are in the following pages.
The field of numerical simulations in the naval field is in a phase of great development both in the structures of large sizes (tankers and large container) for both military and recreational boating.
The most important fields of application are, for example, the study of new materials, optimization of the shape of the hulls, vibration analysis, cavitation for propellers or pumps, hydraulic analysis on the emission of noise, etc..
Research Institutes ENEA, CNR, INGV and NURC La Spezia have expressed strong interest in many research activities in their respective areas of competence that require significant resources calculation, for example, for the implementation of mathematical models of fluid dynamics to describe the marine circulation, the sea state and the implementation of models to provide information on the marine ecosystem.
Another application of great interest to the District is the development of an intelligent model for the analysis of complex scenarios and decision support. A typical example is the operation of a port of intrusion.
The same technology software can be used to synthesize virtual scenarios designed for civilian purposes and military training (eg driving vehicles), for e-learning (learning) and applications for edu-tainment (Learning and fun). It should be stressed that it
application area (edu-tainment) and, among other things, an area of \u200b\u200bgreat interest both in terms of business in terms of "uniqueness" in research and development even at university level .
addition, the use of processing tools that take complex mathematical models for logistics and movement of vessels, also allow you to improve the security of port areas and improve significantly the operating costs of shipping.
Possible applications of the Centre for Supercomputing - In brief, the models are as follows:
-Modelling number of logistics
-port modeling for intrusion detection (surface and submarine)
-modeling for the security and the prevention of intrusion by unauthorized use of RFID and GPRS
-tools Numerical modeling of local marine circulation
-Recognition Automatic on staff duties especially critical for plants by analysis of sensitive data (fingerprints, facial features, vocal, etc.).
-modeling for fluidonamica, coupled with geochemical models of marine circulation
-modeling for the problems cover-up of the Gulf
-modeling for the problems of erosion and nourishment coast adjacent to the achievements
-port modeling for the movement of oil pollution due to accidental discharges and / or accidents involving vessels
The output in terms of services and solutions within the district are, among many others, the following:
-Creation of predictive models for the management of emergency situations and alert
-D models of risk, hazard and intervention for the development of systems for monitoring, prevention and intervention in the face of various sources of danger in the Gulf and the Province
-management and data processing for the safety of the port-

energy and industrial-processing scenarios for extreme events
-structural calculation and simulation for new forms of hulls and propellers
-processing models for the construction of offshore platforms (vessels for commercial shipping, recreational and military, underwater systems, wind energy systems systems, offshore and specialized vessels for plants, etc.).
-Realization of real-time maps for the movement of vessels
